And when worn for decoration, a silk pocket square must not be used for the pocket square's true function: service!

At the most opportune time and when appropriately presented, this thoughtful and respectful gesture will convey a man's true gentility.

EXAMPLE: You and your wife have invited a colleague and his wife out for an evening dinner. While at dinner, your colleague's wife accidentally spills her wine. You should immediately reach to your breast pocket, without standing, and quietly extend to her your linen pocket square.

Two important things to note:

If you have chosen to wear a silk pocket square that evening you need to make sure that a clean linen or cotton handkerchief accompanies the inside breast pocket of your jacket to offer a lady.

Never stand up and reach for the handkerchief in your back pocket. You will be assuming that it is clean, and you will also draw undo attention to an already uncomfortable situation.

There are those men whose understanding and taste are unfortunately restricted to their palette. And their are those men who truly understand the significance of its service and the unique personal style the pocket square adds in the completion of a man's suit.

May I suggest you adopt the latter.

This shoe has been talked about by style scouts and fashion writers ever since.

At first (and for a long time), there was a question as to the correct model. Then, the issue arose as to whether brown suede shoes should be worn for business or kept solely for casual wear.

I am here to report that the brown suede shoe, in its 2 most popular models -- the plain cap-toe oxford lace-up and the monk strap -- will be the high spot of fashion this summer season.

You walk into the store where you are cordially greeted by the happy haberdasher who quickly asks," What size suit do you normally wear?"

Seldom are you asked about any fit challenges you may have experienced in the past with regard to the jacket, discomfort of the seat, rise, or overall fit of your trousers. Furthermore, you are rarely placed in front of a mirror -- with tape measure in hand -- having your measurements taken and recorded so that you can accurately determine the correct size suit to select.

The following steps are your guide to knowing what size suit you really wear...

Establishing Your Size

Overarm - The tailor should place the tape over both arms and parallel to the ground. This measurement should be taken 2 inches above the nipple line. Snug, but not tight.

Chest - The tailor should place the tape over the fullest part of your chest under the arms and parallel to the ground. He should make sure the tape is over the shoulder blades in the back. Snug, but not tight. If there are more then 8 inches between the chest and overarm, you should go up to the next suit or jacket size to accommodate for the large overarm.

Coat Length - This is measured in back -- from the bottom of the shirt collar to the bottom of the seat. The coat should completely cover the curvature of the seat.

Here's a common formula for figuring the coat length: A man's height in inches, minus 9, divided by 2.

For example:

Height 6 feet 2 inches = 74 inches

74 inches minus 9 inches = 65 inches

65 inches divided by 2 inches = 32.5 inches

32.5 inches would be the coat length

Waist - Make sure you have your pants on your waist in the position you normally wear them. The tailor should place the tape slightly under the top of your waistband and measure snug, then release it gradually until he is sure it is comfortable to you.

Important Tip: Know Your "Drop"

In ready-made suit sizes, there are standard chest-to-waist "drops" in inches.

The drop is the difference between chest size and waist size. Normally, sizes from 36 to 44 have a 6-inch drop and 46 to 56 have a 5-inch drop.

For example:

Size 46 minus a 5-inch drop = 41-inch waist in trouser

So, if your overarm and chest measurements fit the example above, yet, your waist is 36 inches you should inquire about a "separates" collection the store may offer or consider custom-made clothing.

DO NOT allow yourself to be persuaded that the trouser can be altered more than 2 inches without completely losing the balance of its intended fit.

However, if you enjoy reaching for your car keys from the cheek of your rear-end, the uncomfortable smile from a high rise, and the fashion trend of one continuous back pocket, proceed and enjoy!

And they are just anxious to sell you what is on sale with as few alterations as possible!

That is hardly the person you should defer to in matters of style or fit.

Well, here is the good news: The science of the correct fit for a suit is not as difficult as you may think. This is definitely something that can be learned.

Here's how to determine your true fit...

While a man's suit is made to fit a standard form, very few men can slip on a ready-made suit and find that it needs no alterations.

So, the more knowledgeable you can become about how your clothes should fit in relation to your body's frame, the more likely you are to have a well-balanced, tailored result.

The following steps are what you should expect when being fitted for a suit and what you should request in order to leave with an elegant, tailored finish.

Your Responsibilities:

Arrive well dressed. It sets the tone of your expectations from the start.

Bring or wear a well-fitted dress shirt with correct sleeve length and collar height.

Wear dress shoes with proper heel height for correct length and bottom width.

After you've selected your suit and slipped on the trouser and jacket, stand naturally in front of the mirror. (Don't stand as if you are anticipating losing 10 pounds!)

The tailor should begin the suit's fitting from the top and work down.

The Tailor's Responsibilities:

JACKET

The shoulder's width or point-to-point needs to be wide enough to allow the jacket's fabric to drape from the shoulder in an unbroken line down the entire sleeve.

There should be enough fullness across the back and chest so the lapels lie flat without gapping open.

There should be sufficient fullness over the shoulder blades for a slight break -- extended up the back, starting at the bottom of the armholes. These slight breaks provide enough room for ease of movement and comfort.

The collar should not stand away from your neck or have horizontal ridges below the base of your neck. If they appear, request that the collar be lowered by cutting away the excess fabric under the collar.

If tension lines are visibly pulling across the shoulder blades, the back is too tight and must be let out.

In order for the jacket collar at the back to hang correctly and look its very best, make sure that at least an inch of shirt collar shows above it.

The waist should be comfortably suppressed to the natural frame of the body. If X-shaped lines appear on either side of the jacket's fastened waist button, the waist should be let out.

The back vents should hang in a straight line perpendicular to the floor. When buttoned, you should have enough room to sit down comfortably.

The jacket sleeve should extend to where the wrist breaks with the hand. Short arms should allow for a 1/2-inch of shirt cuff to show. Long arms should allow 3/4-inch to 1-inch of shirt cuff to show. Details like this define the well dressed man.

TROUSERS

Place them as high on your waist as comfortable. Placing pants on hips make the crotch hang too low and look sloppy; plus, it spreads the pockets and pleats. Like the armhole of a jacket, the trousers' rise should fit as high as comfortable in order to provide ease of movement.

With pleated trousers, the hip and thigh must be full enough for the pleats to lie flat while standing.

If trousers will be worn with braces (suspenders), the pants must be fitted with them. Trousers that will be worn exclusively with braces should allow for 3/4-inch to 1-inch more in the waist -- so they can "suspend" from the shoulders.

The length of the trousers should allow for a slight break on top of the shoe. When in full stride, your pants should be long enough to cover your socks and wide enough to cover your shoelaces.

With plain bottom trousers, you should request a slant hem 1/2-inch downward from front to back so they remain at the heel when walking.

Cuff size should be 1-1/2 inches for men under 5 feet, 10 inches, and 1-3/4 inches to 2 inches if taller than 5'10".

Thankfully, independent tailors (quality tailors in better men's stores as well as personal clothiers with sound professional advice) can still be found. When they are found, they should become your trusted companion.

My mentor in the trade shared with me the advantages of purchasing a second pair of matching suit pants with the purchase of the 2 pinnacle suits in a man's wardrobe: the navy solid and charcoal gray solid.

It was great advice 18 years ago, and it's great advice today.

In addition, it makes good sense to purchase one extra pair of matching pants for each of those suits.

Here's why...

Average Life of a Pair of Pants

As long as I have been in the clothing business, I have yet to receive a phone call requesting the replacement of a coat belonging to a suit.

However, I have had hundreds of calls asking about the possibility of replacing the pant belonging to the suit.

Generally, you arrive at your office and your suit coat gets placed over the back of a chair, on a hanger behind your door, or a coat rack. Outside of breakfast, lunch and dinner mishaps the jacket remains relatively unscathed.

But your suit pants are worn all day through morning commutes, business meetings, lunches, business after-hours, evening commutes, sliding in and out of the seat of your car, office chairs, restaurant booths, etc. You get the picture...

4 Advantages of Buying a 2nd Pair of Matching Suit Pants

#1 Economics - for the price of a second pair of pants, you add another suit to your wardrobe.

#2 Longevity - like rotating the tires on your car, this additional pant will allow you to rotate a fresh pair of pants. This way, each one will have even wearing, and the fabric will have time to breathe and rest.

#3 Travel - if you do overnight travel for business, it allows you to pack one suit with additional matching pant, 2 shirts (1 white, 1 blue), 2 ties (1 red, 1 yellow) and a pair of shoes. That will enable you to conduct business for 2 days.

#4 Style - if available, try ordering one pant in a pleated style and the other in a flat front style. That way, you can give yourself 2 different fashionable looks.

Where to Buy Men's Separates

These are the best online stores to buy matching suit pants from:

Mens Suit Separates

Navy & Charcoal Gray Suit Pants

While I don't recommend buying an extra pair of suit pants for every suit, I firmly believe that the 2 foundational suits that every man needs -- no matter your trade -- are: one navy solid suit and one charcoal gray solid suit.

These should be the first two suits that you buy and the two you should always replace when needed before any other.

And to complement your basic business wardrobe, you should also buy one additional pair of matching pants for each -- your navy suit and your charcoal gray suit.

Wool, cotton, and silk are all "live" natural fibers. They get tired. Frequent rests between wearings preserve the life and elasticity of the fabric and add greatly to the total life of the garment. And just as your feet need rest, so do your shoes.

Once you build up a balanced wardrobe that gives you proper rotation of garments, the cost of replacing those items becomes less than the wasteful practice of wearing a few garments steadily until they are exhausted.

Here's how to build a balanced business wardrobe, without going broke...

A balanced wardrobe for a man should be built around the following:

Suits

Navy Solid Suit

Charcoal Gray Solid Suit

Navy Pin Strike or Chalk Stripe Suit

Charcoal Gray Pin Strip or Chalk Stripe Suit

Shirts

White Shirts (4)

Blue Shirts (2)

Neckwear

Regimental Striped Ties (4)

Medallion Patterned Ties (4)

Footwear

Black Cap Toe Lace Up Shoes

Brown Split-Toe Lace Up Shoes

The modest outlay for this business wardrobe means you can dress up and look successful at all times.

You'll be amazed at how much this basic business wardrobe will increase your self-confidence, your success, and your savings account.

It's simple, quick, and painless. Not only will it save you money on dry cleaning, but it will also save the life and longevity of your suits.

In my business, I wear suits every day.

This is what I recommend for keeping your suits clean and pressed -- without breaking the bank!

Your at-home suit cleaning regime should include the following 3 items:

 #1 Fabric Steamer

This is not intended to replace your regular dry cleaner. A fabric steamer is however the appropriate remedy for:

surface dust

lingering smells

wrinkles from sitting at your desk, driving in your car, airplane travel, and clothes that have been packed in a suitcase

However, if your garments are soiled with oil or grease from foods, or if you are caught outside on a hot day and you sweat profusely, that would certainly warrant the services of a professional dry cleaner.

 #2 Suit Valet

Ideally, this would be placed relatively close to your closet.

When using a suit valet, you will want to follow these 5 steps:

1. When you arrive home, turn on the steamer. Remove your suit.

2. Apply steam to the wrinkles in the break of the arms of your coat, as well as the coat front and back.

3. Apply steam to the wrinkles in the crotch and the back of your legs were the pant breaks behind the knee from sitting all day.

4. Lightly brush your suit coat and pants, and hang them on your valet to breathe and air out till the following morning.

5. When putting on a new suit the following morning, simply hang the suit from your valet (that you have steamed and allowed to air out overnight) on the hanger you just removed the new suit from, and let the rotation begin!

 #3 Clothes Brush

This should be kept close to your suit valet.

A good quality clothes brush can be used to remove light dirt and dust from the surface of your garments, as well as to remove lint or pet hair.

IMPORTANT: When professional dry cleaning is required, make sure to dry clean both the coat and the pants together. This will maintain the continuity of the dye in the fabric of the garment. That way, your pants won't fade to a color that no longer matches your suit coat!
